SICKNESS CERTIFICATES

  • Technically, you don't require a doctor's sickness certificate for any illness lasting seven days or less.
  • HOWEVER, your employer may require you to complete a self-certification form (SC2)
  • This is available from your employer or on the HMRC website.

SICK FOR 7 DAYS OR OVER?

  • Sickness Certificates Your employer can ask you for medical evidence to support payment of SSP (statutory sick pay).

  •  A medical certificate, now called a 'Statement of Fitness for Work’ (see below) from your doctor provides evidence that you are sick.

  • You could also provide evidence from someone who is not a GP, e.g. a dentist.
  • Your employer will decide whether or not this evidence is acceptable.
  • Your employer can ask for a medical certificate from your GP.

STATEMENT of FITNESS for WORK - ’THE FIT NOTE'

  • The 'fit note' was introduced on 6 April 2010. (Capable or incapable for work)
  • The note will help you return to work,  by providing more information about the effects of your illness or injury.
